American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has opened up about feeling self-conscious about making her first public appearance in a dress that revealed the scars from her devastating 2026 Winter Olympics crash. Attending Gucci’s star-studded fashion event at Monte Carlo, Vonn wore a dress that put the surgical scars on her leg on full display.
While she battled moments of insecurity about the thought of even putting on such an exposed dress, the Olympian ultimately chose to wear it anyway to proudly let the world know how far she has come since her crash.
Lindsey Vonn met with a gruesome crash during the downhill event at the Milan Cortina Games in February, leading to a diagnosis of a tibia fracture that required multiple surgeries. Ever since, the Olympian has faced criticism online of all kinds but has managed to defy the odds through several public endeavors, including an appearance at the Met Gala event and a courtside appearance at the Queen’s Club tournament to cheer the returning legend, Serena Williams.
At Gucci’s exclusive Monte Carlo fashion event, Vonn made a bold statement in a runway dress that let the scars on her leg take center stage. The Olympian posed confidently, wearing a midi dress that exposed parts of her scar on her leg.
While there is appreciation from fans online commending Vonn’s bravery, Vonn shared an emotional statement that highlighted the mental trauma that went into accepting her new reality. She admitted feeling self-conscious while trying on the runway look, but later felt glad about pushing through her fear.
“First time I wore a dress in public since my injury!!! When I tried on the dress, I was really self-conscious and wasn’t sure if I was ready to be in public showing my scars… but I’m happy I did it. Accepting my new scars has been one of the hardest parts of this injury mentally, and it’s still a work in progress, but I’ll get there. 💪🏻” she said.
Vonn also gave a shoutout to Gucci for handing her this opportunity to step out into the public in a new look that made her feel totally “Gucci.”
Lindsey Vonn Reflects on the Mental and Physical Toll of Her Winter Olympics Injury
Two months after the crash, Vonn sat down with ESPN and reflected on the injury that was accompanied by devastating mental and physical agony:
“The injury was incredibly painful. The amount of surgeries I needed, this injury was so much harder on so many different levels. I can’t quite put it into words.”
“After the crash, I was screaming at the top of my lungs, my body was really in pain, and I hope I never experience that again,” she said (0:58).
Vonn has, however, shared regular updates of her recovery on her social media and has vowed to make a successful recovery.
