The Ole Miss Rebels have reaffirmed their backing for quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’ fight to get an extra year of eligibility after he missed the entire 2022 season due to incapacitating medical conditions.
Previously, the NCAA declined to grant the quarterback a sixth year of eligibility after previously rejecting his waiver request for the 2026 season. In 2022, Chambliss was only able to play a few games due to illness. Chambliss has the medical records to back up his claim, but still, the NCAA hasn’t approved his request.
The Rebels are ready to battle this one out with the quarterback as they slammed the NCAA for turning down Chambliss’ request.
“The NCAA athletics eligibility subcommittee’s decision to deny Trinidad’s appeal is indefensible in light of the undisputed facts,” Ole Miss said in a statement. “The NCAA staff and the subcommittee asserted that Trinidad was not denied the opportunity to compete during the 2022 season, despite the reality that he did not dress for a single game while suffering from severe, incapacitating medical conditions. Those conditions were fully and contemporaneously documented by his treating physician, yet this waiver request was still denied when it should have been approved at the NCAA staff level.”
Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss Takes Fight to Court After NCAA Denial
Trinidad Chambliss has taken action of his own to get the extra year of eligibility. After the NCAA denial, the quarterback has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA’s decision, seeking an injunction that would allow him to play in 2026. A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 12 in Mississippi, where the court will rule on the injunction.
As for the NCAA, they argue that the medical documentation from the illness is insufficient or lacks certain formalities.
Chambliss played his first two seasons at Ferris State. He then transferred to Ole Miss and started for the Rebels last season, leading them to an 11-1 regular season record and taking them to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.
It remains to be seen how the court rules on the injunction, but if Chambliss is not granted the relief, his college career is over.
