The Toronto Maple Leafs have chosen to part ways with their General Manager, Brad Treliving. After topping their division last season, the squad has taken a significant step back this year, sitting seventh in the Atlantic Division with a record of 32-30-13.
According to reports, management decided enough was enough and decided to part ways with Brad Treliving who had taken over the role on May 31, 2023.
Following the announcement, William Nylander while speaking to the media stated that there are multiple factors that contributed to the team’s failure, and that even the players are to blame.
According to an X post by reporter Mark Masters, Nylander explained,
“Obviously, it’s sad … Just shows what we did this year wasn’t good enough. That sucks because that comes on the players, too. It’s not just his fault.”
According to rumors there were numerous causes that led to the firing of GM Brad Treliving. Inconsistent performances this season added with questionable trades are just some of the few reasons behind this decision.
With the Maple Leafs out of the playoff picture, serious questions loom in the offseason that is to come. While current captain Auston Matthews remains out with a Grade 3 MCL tear, even his future with the club remains shrouded in uncertainty.
Leafs HC Craig Berube reflects on relationship with Brad Treliving

Following Brad Treliving’s firing, head coach Craig Berube praised the team’s former general manager noting his to be a “great person.” In an interview, Berube described Brad Treliving as one of the best people to be around.
The HC also explained how the two of them had intended to establish something great with the team since last year, but failed to succeed.
According to another X post from reporter Mark Masters, Berube explained,
“Great person to be around. A lot of fun to work with as a coach. We wanted to build something here & last year we were right there & we didn’t succeed. This year, we dropped off. I mean, I don’t know what to say, guys. I feel for him & his family right now.”
The Maple Leafs have yet to declare what their next step will be, or whether a proven hockey executive will join the team as general manager.
There is speculation that the franchise will be able to hire Bred Treliving’s replacement before the 2026 NHL Draft. The Leafs have seven more regular-season games left this season, with their next game against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on April 3.
