Rangers Star Vincent Trocheck Opens Up About His Life Threatening Injury Situation – “I Thought I Was Dying”

Vincent Trocheck was involved in some serious health issues at the start of the 2025-26 season. The center was out of the league for about 15 games, and at the time, the reason was described only as an upper-body injury.

Fast forward to now, the center recently discussed what happened, admitting that he was suffering from a bacterial lung infection. Trocheck revealed how he was experiencing small back spasms even before the season began. Despite this, he wanted to play, but his situation worsened during an Oct. 10 game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Vincent Trocheck described how a blow caused an infection to spread in his lung, necessitating emergency surgery. It has also been reported that he was admitted to the hospital for almost a week and had a chest tube placed to drain the infection. According to the New York Post, Trocheck said:

“I thought I was just having back spasms, and then I played the first game. Got a little bit worse. Played in Buffalo. I got a cross check right in that area, and whatever fluid was in there, it’s like bubbles, and I guess the bubble burst, and it spread. So then it just got a lot worse. I had a lot of fluid around my lung, so I had to have surgery to get the fluid removed. It was very scary. I thought I was dying.”

Despite missing so many games, Vincent Trocheck had a solid season, finishing with 16 goals and 37 assists in 67 games. There have also been whispers that Trocheck could be traded, which the center recently addressed.

In a recent locker room interview, Vincent Trocheck addressed the lingering whispers regarding his trade, alleging that he even spoke with Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury, who did not bring up a trade with him.

According to Blue Line Station, Trocheck stated:

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. I talked to Drury already yesterday, not really about that. Like I said a couple of times, me and him have a good line of communication, so we’ll be in contact.”

Trocheck also expressed his displeasure with the Rangers’ failure to make the playoffs again this season. He professes to be a competitive individual who wants to see the squad develop from here on.

“I’m a competitive guy. I don’t like to lose. We’re not used to this situation, being out of the playoffs two years in a row. Not making the playoffs sucks. You want to see the team heading in the direction where we’re going to contend,” He explained.

The Rangers finished the season with a record of 34-39-9. The squad finished last in the Metropolitan Division with a total of 77 points. This clearly indicates that the team could make some significant changes this offseason.
