The Edmonton Oilers have not been at their best in the first round of the 2026 NHL Playoffs. While they won the postseason opener against the Anaheim Ducks, the squad has now endured two consecutive losses.
Game 3 was the highlight of the Ducks’ playoff journey thus far, as they dominated and won 7-3. The game slipped away from the Oilers during the third period, when Anaheim scored four goals.
The key highlights were Beckett Sennecke and Leo Carlsson’s goals, which occurred only 42 seconds apart. This loss has prompted serious concerns about Edmonton’s defensive performance this season.
Recently, a video appeared on the internet showing Connor McDavid sitting quietly with his eyes peeled open. An X page called it out, asking fans if they thought McDavid was fine. The caption to the post stated:
“bro is mcdavid okay”
In the comments section of this post, people began to speculate that McDavid is reconsidering his decision to stay with the Oilers. Some supporters even went so far as to say that the Oilers can never make a championship team and that McDavid would never win the Stanley Cup in their uniform.
Talking more about these fans’ comments, here’s a look at them:
“I said it a few years ago. McDavid will never win the Stanley Cup with the Oilers. @EdmontonOilers They didn’t build the team accordingly. Two players make up the team. No defense, especially no goaler…” One fan stated.
“He’s contemplating his life choices.” Another fan pointed out.
“No why would he be. Generational talent held back by a team that can’t sign a decent goaltender.” One fan explained.
“he knows hes cooked again,” One fan stated.
“I think he’s starting to realize it will never happen in that sweater,” Another fan pointed out.
McDavid still has a couple of years left on his current contract, after which there can be a chance that he will consider leaving the team.
How Many Seasons Does Connor McDavid Have Left on his Contract With the Oilers?

The Edmonton Oilers hit the jackpot by drafting Connor McDavid as the first overall choice in the 2015 NHL draft. McDavid quickly became the face of the organization, and in 2016, he was given the opportunity to lead the team at the age of 19.
By the late 2010s, McDavid had established himself as perhaps the best player in the NHL and was referred to as a generational talent.
The Oilers have had some successful seasons with his assistance, but they are still far from winning the most coveted trophy in hockey, the Stanley Cup.
McDavid inked an eight-year contract with Edmonton in 2017 worth $100 million. On Oct. 6, 2025, it was revealed that the center had only signed a two-year contract extension that would cover the seasons 2026-27 and 2027-28.
Given his big name, this is a rather minor contract, and the reason has been assumed to be McDavid noting whether or not the Oilers can put together a good team. If the Oilers do not strengthen their defense during the next two seasons, the center may consider making a switch after he gets into unrestricted free agency in 2028.
