The Toronto Maple Leafs have finally decided to hire John Chayka as their new general manager. While Chayka does not have a good reputation among fans or the NHL, the team opted to take a risk by hiring him as GM and Mats Sundin as the new Hockey Executive.
Interestingly, there has been a lot of pushback from critics for this decision, after all, John Chayka was involved in a major controversy in 2021. However, despite the outcry, some fans have high hopes for the Maple Leafs’ new general manager. The organization recently released a video on X in which new GM Chayka expressed his desire to lead the squad forward from here.
The caption of the post read,
“Hockey’s better with tradition. Hockey’s better with passion. Hockey’s better with fans that care.”
Some fans began to show huge support for Chayka in the comments section of this post, suggesting that the Leafs will undoubtedly be unstoppable next season. Apart from this, some fans even stated that the new GM will end all the hating by making the team too powerful next year.

The 2025-26 season was definitely not a good one for Toronto. They finished last in the Atlantic Division with only 78 points in 82 games. They finished with a 32-26-14 record, ranking fifth last out of 32 clubs in the league. Due to this season, the team chose to part ways with their former general manager, Brad Treliving, before the regular season had started.
Following that, Maple Leafs President Keith Pelley expressed his excitement for the squad, indicating that they will be under new leadership. Pelley’s excitement was evident even during the news of John Chayka’s arrival, as Sportsnet reported that he commented,
“Today is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. I’m thrilled to welcome John and Mats to their roles as two great hockey minds who will strengthen our entire hockey club. From the start of this process, it’s been about building a championship-calibre team for our fans and our city, and today is an important step towards that goal.”
With the 2026 NHL Draft just around the corner, Chayka’s first step toward changing things on the team can begin there.
