Matthew Knies Gets Brutally Honest About Maple Leafs’ Decision To Sack GM Brad Treliving

The Toronto Maple Leafs shocked the hockey community with their decision to fire General Manager Brad Treliving with seven games left in the regular season. It has been stated that the team’s ownership and management conducted an internal assessment and decided to sack Treliving.

Maple Leafs’ Matthew Knies, talked about the firing in an interview, saying it was unexpected and came as bit of a shock. According to reporter Mark Masters, Knies explained his thoughts,

“A little shocking, to be honest. Pretty abrupt. Not much of a notice right before the game … now it’s starting to set in. I wish him the best of luck. An unbelievable person. He got to know me really well & I cherish that relationship we had.”

Brad Treliving became a part of the Maple Leafs in May 2023, shortly after leaving the Calgary Flames. In his near three-year-long tenure, Toronto amassed a respectable regular season record of 129-82-27. However, their record of 10-10 in the playoffs held them back from winning the Stanley Cup.

After topping the Atlantic Division last season, the Leafs entered the 2025/26 NHL season with lofty ambitions. However, injuries and inconsistent form has led to them sitting seventh in their Division and 14th overall in the Eastern Conference.

Following Brad Treliving’s firing, Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment president Keith Pelley conducted a press conference in Toronto on March 31 at 2 p.m. ET. There, Pelly claimed that the team will look to try and forge a fresh path for itself under new leadership.

    According to Sportsnet, Pelly explained:

“Brad Treliving is a man that we all have deep respect and appreciation for, both as a hockey executive and as a person, but it was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership.”

Apart from this, the team’s head coach, Craig Berube, also addressed the firing in an interview, noting that he feels awful not only for Brad Treliving but also for his family. According to the same report, Berube said,

“I feel for Brad and his family. You never like to hear that or see that. And it was tough. It’s still difficult right now for me, but that’s the business. We didn’t live up to expectations this year, and that’s what happens.”

Treliving, on the other hand, has not released any commented on the decision. Now, the entire hockey world is waiting to see what the 56-year-old executive will head next.
