Jack Hughes’ injury raised concern Thursday night, but early signs point toward relief for the New Jersey Devils and Team USA. Hughes left the Devils’ 3-2 overtime win over the Nashville Predators after three shifts in the first period and did not return. With the Olympics approaching, questions quickly followed.
NHL reporter Amanda Stein shared head coach Sheldon Keefe’s update on X. Keefe said Hughes is still being evaluated and will undergo imaging soon.
“The only update is that he’s still getting evaluated,” Keefe said. “In the next little bit, he’s going to get some imaging and get a better idea of what’s happening. Until we have those results we won’t know his status in terms of travel and the situation going forward.”
The Devils labeled the injury as lower body, and the expectation is that Hughes will be day-to-day. However, soon after, Pierre LeBrun added important details, saying that no one involved appears worried about Hughes’ Olympic availability.
“At this point, no one involved seems worried it might affect Hughes’ Olympic availability. Sounds more day to day. But obviously, this close to Milan, it’s noteworthy.” LeBrun wrote.
Hughes’ exit forced New Jersey to adjust on the fly. Nico Hischier stepped up, scoring 42 seconds into overtime to secure the win. Jesper Bratt tied the game late in the third, while Dougie Hamilton also scored. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots as the Devils snapped a two-game skid.
Jack Hughes’ Performance Amid a Season Marred by Injuries
This season, Jack Hughes has delivered inconsistent but impactful results. Through 36 games, he has 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points. His speed and vision continue to drive offense, even as injuries interrupt his rhythm. If we look at his numbers in January, his playmaking stands out, with 13 assists in 14 games.
Hughes is set to be a first-time Olympian alongside his brother Quinn. Team USA opens Olympic play in two weeks, making every update meaningful. For now, the situation appears normal and not one of worry. The Devils will monitor Hughes closely, but early indications suggest his Olympic plans remain intact.
