So far, one of the biggest concerns for both the Oilers and the Ducks has been their defense. Due to this, the encounters between the two teams have been high-scoring and pretty tight. Even during Game 4, the two teams were neck to neck 3-3 until the Ducks’ Ryan Poehling scored 2:29 into overtime to seal the victory.
Poehling’s OT goal has been one of the ontroversial ones because the puck was never clearly seen crossing the goal line. The initial call was made for the goal, but even the final review left things questionable. After examining the footage, it was discovered that the camera angles for the puck were obscured, leading to the officials guessing it was a goal.
Oilers Head Coach Kris Knoblauch Was Not Pleased with Ryan Poehling’s Goal Call

Following the game, there was widespread criticism of the referees, with some arguing that under NHL regulations, no goal determination can be made without definitive proof.
Even Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch discussed the goal in a postgame interview, claiming that he, too, did not see the puck cross the line. According to Sportsnet, Knoblauch said:
“I can’t see it going in. I can’t see the line. … The (initial) goal call on the ice was probably about 60 to 90 seconds after (the shot), maybe even more. They huddled when they got to center ice, and then they made the (initial) call that it was a good goal. I don’t know. Wasn’t very definitive.”
Even Ryan Poehling said he wasn’t sure if the puck went in or not. According to Sportsnet, he said:
“I thought I saw some white (between the puck and the goal line) when I was behind the net. Then everyone was celebrating. Did it go in? I’m like, ‘I think so?’ But yeah, I thought so right away.”
Analysts have even described this situation as one of the worst calls made by referees in NHL playoff history.
