NHL fans reacted online after Quinn Hughes and his brother Luke began following Kai Trump on Instagram following Team USA’s White House visit. Kai is an up and coming golfer and also the eldest grandchild of U.S. president Donald Trump.
Team USA secured a 2-1 overtime win against Canada in the final at the Milano Cortina Games. Jack Hughes, Quinn’s other brother, scored the winner, giving the United States its first Olympic gold in men’s hockey since the 1980 Lake Placid team.
The players landed in Miami on Monday and continued celebrations into Tuesday morning. Later, they traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet President Donald Trump at his State Of The Union address.
After the visit, a hockey page on X noted that Quinn Hughes and Luke (only follwed Kai), who was not part of the USA’s Olympic roster, started following Kai Trump and Margo Martin.
Kai Trump is the eldest granddaughter of President Trump and the daughter of Donald Trump Jr. She has built a social media presence and is interested in playing golf. Whereas, Margo Martin serves as a communications advisor and special assistant to the president.
The post quickly gained the attention of the NHL community, prompting some fans to react.
Some reactions focused on the age gap between Hughes, 27, and the 18-year-old Kai Trump.
“Almost 27 year old Hughes following an 18 year old Kai.” One fan wrote.
“It’s funny how the Hughes brother become a MAGA Propaganda now.” Another fan wrote, criticizing the move.
“I didn’t think I could love him more but here we are. What a beauty,” A fan reacted.
“The Hughes brothers are just rage baiting them at this point 😭😭,” One fan mentioned.
“Given everything that’s happened this week, he’s hardlaunched himself as a tkachuk which makes sense given his history with Keith. Assume he’s okay being viewed/treated no differently than them atp,” One fan reacted.
“Oh he’s not hiding it now,” A fan simply wrote.
Jack Hughes helped end USA’s 46-year Olympic gold drought
Jack Hughes delivered a golden goal for the United States, and the 24-year-old helped secure the overtime win against Canada. That play ended a 46-year drought for the nation’s men’s team. He finished the tournament with four goals and three assists in six games.
While talking to the media after the win, Hughes praised his country.
“It’s all about our country right now, I love the USA,” Hughes said on Sunday. “I love my teammates. It’s unbelievable. The USA Hockey Brotherhood is so strong. We have so much support from our players. I’m so proud of the Americans today.”
Hughes also credited goaltender Connor Hellebuyck as the team’s best player. The American goaltender made 41 saves in the finals alone, fending off a Canadian lineup stacked with offensive talent.
