The Los Angeles Rams may be considered one of the top teams in the NFL right now, but they are facing a problem no team can beat, and that is their quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is getting old. While his retirement is not seen to happen anytime soon, it seems that head coach Sean McVay may already be bracing for the “inevitable.”
According to NFL columnist Vinny Bonsignore, with the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, the Rams may be drafting a quarterback they could develop to replace Matthew Stafford should the QB decide to retire in a few years. That pick is very much possible as the Rams have the No. 13 and No, 29 picks for the draft this year.
While this might seem harsh, especially with Stafford still in his prime, it now seems that the Rams are looking at a future where the QB that once led them to a Super Bowl win might finally hang up his boots, so looking for a replacement would actually be a fair move. However, that new QB would probably be taken under Stafford’s wing and be mentored by him, not taking his place entirely.
Who Might the Los Angeles Rams Target As Their Possible Pick To Succeed Matthew Stafford?
Multiple analysts are now believing that the Rams may be looking to get a quarterback as a backup for whenever Matthew Stafford retires. With the best QB in 2026, Fernando Mendoza, most likely being picked at No. 1 by the Las Vegas Raiders, the team is hoping that the second-best QB for this year’s draft would not be picked until No. 13. This means that they are targeting Alabama’s Ty Simpson.
ESPN NFL draft insider Mel Kiper Jr. is one of the analysts who believe that the Rams may be looking at Simpson as Stafford’s understudy, saying that the Bama QB would fit the best with the Rams.
“If you looked at him over those first nine games, getting the ball out, he was letting it rip,” he said. “So for me, the Rams may be the good fit, the best fit for Ty Simpson if in fact he’s there near the end of the first round.”
Still, that is if no other team picks him ahead of them, which is a big possibility.
