Gabe Jacas has landed a special jersey number from the New England Patriots, who signed the offensive linebacker to a four-year, $8.6 million rookie contract. In the official roster list of the Patriots, the 6-foot-4 star was given a No. 50 jersey.
For eight seasons with the Patriots (2001-08), Vrabel wore No. 50, during which he helped the franchise win three Super Bowls. He was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2023.
Jacas, who was selected 55th overall in the second round out of Illinois, has now started to draw comparisons with Vrabel, who is regarded as one of the greatest linebackers in the Patriots’ history.
Jacas projects as a physical edge defender and is known for his toughness and versatility.
Mike Vrabel Opens Up on Gabe Jacas’ Contract Dispute
Gabe Jacas missed the start of training camp because his rookie contract was not finalized. The Patriots were worrying to give him a guaranteed contract because of Jacas’ injury concerns. The linebacker had dealt with a knee injury that required surgery, a lingering hamstring issue, and other health concerns.
On Friday, Mike Vrabel said discussions with Jacas and his representatives were “positive.” These comments came before the four-year deal was struck.
“Well, continuing to work through the contract,” Vrabel said. “I think that those have been positive, obviously, between the club and his representative. And, hopefully, we’ll get him in here sooner rather than later.”
“We’re not going to put a timeline on it or a timeframe,” Vrabel added. “But, spoken to Gabe personally. And again, excited to get him in when he’s under contract.”
Vrabel also mentioned that his staff had spoken with the rookie personally.
“We’re not going to get into the injuries,” Vrabel said. “I mentioned that Gabe had a surgery to take care of some things. And that’s, that’s where we’re at. And again, like Mike said, we’re going to evaluate him when he gets here. And, I know that Jim and Frank have been in contact with him throughout the summer.”
In the end, the disagreement was not over Jacas wanting to avoid playing for New England. It was about the language of the contract that safeguards the interests of both parties.
