Kansas Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been hit with a double whammy in the 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. He suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee. The MRI confirmed the worst.
On Monday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed that Mahomes suffered a lateral collateral ligament as well.
The injury happened in the fourth quarter when Mahomes scrambled out of the pocket to evade Chargers defenders. He eventually threw the ball, but in the process, his left leg planted awkwardly in the turf. At the same time, a Chargers defender tackled him, resulting in a knee bent. Mahomes immediately grabbed his left leg and needed assistance to leave the field.
The injury not only ends Mahomes’ season, but their latest loss ensured that the Chiefs will be missing the playoffs for the first time under the three-time Super Bowl champion. The Chiefs have handed the reins to backup QB Gardner Minshew for the remainder of the season.

After the surgery was successful, Mahomes shared a strong comeback message to fans.
“Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it’s hurts, But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever,” he wrote.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid trusts his quarterback to come back stronger.
“I’ve had a good visit with him a couple of different times. He’s in a good place,” Reid said Monday. “He feels like he let people down, but he’s ready for the challenge ahead, which is what’s real right now. He’s just got to get through surgery, wherever it might be, and move on from there.”
With the injury to Mahomes, the Chiefs will probably need a new quarterback next season.
