Ahead of the 2026 NFL season, ESPN has published its annual position player rankings. Over the past few days, the quarterback rankings in particular have been a point of contention among fans online.
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen currently leads the chart, while Kansas City Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes slipped down to second place after occupying the top spot for the past three seasons.
Reacting to Mahomes’ descent in the rankings, Fox Sports analyst Mark Gunnels vehemently disagreed on X with the player standings. He further called Mahomes the “second greatest of all time,” just behind Tom Brady.
“Imagine saying a current quarterback is better than Patrick Mahomes who has three Super Bowl MVPs and two regular season MVPs. He’s already the second greatest of all-time. Only Tom Brady is ahead of him”, Gunnels wrote on X.
The list also features last season’s MVP QB Matthew Stafford in the third spot, with Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson sitting in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Opens Up On Rankings After Injury-Hit Season
In an interview with Yahoo Sports Daily on Wednesday, QB Patrick Mahomes reacted to his current rankings.
When asked about his current position, the Kansas City Chiefs’ signal-caller attributed it to his injury last season combined with the way Kansas has performed in the past few years. However, Mahomes is determined to get back to No. 1.
“You understand it. I mean coming off injury and we didn’t play as well as we wanted to in the last few years”, Mahomes stated.
“You are going to drop in the rankings of some sort, but at the same time there’s a lot of good quarterbacks on that list. I am just happy to be a part of it you know. You’ve got to go out and prove it every single year, so its my job this year to prove why i can jump up to the list back to no.1 ” he further elaborated.
In 14 games last season, Mahomes threw for total of 3587 yards with 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions to his name before sustaining a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee in December.
