Nearly a month after being fired by the Arizona Cardinals, Jonathan Gannon has been hired by the Green Bay Packers. Gannon’s role changes as he was the head coach for the Cardinals, and now he’ll be the Packers defensive coordinator.
He replaces Jeff Hafley, who is now the head coach of the Miami Dolphins after two seasons as the Packers’ defensive coordinator.
Gannon has nearly two decades of experience in the NFL, primarily in defensive coaching. Getting the 43-year-old coach who has the necessary experience should’ve met with more positive responses than it did.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared the news on X, announcing, “Packers officially named Jonathan Gannon their defensive coordinator today.” In response, most fans trashed the decision and labeled Gannon as someone who couldn’t make it as a head coach.
“lmfao dude got demoted how sad,” a fan wrote.
“They are cooked,” a fan wrote.
“Another DC who got exposed as a HC just returning to what everyone thought he could do. Expecting average,” a fan wrote.
“Thank god he’s not available for eagles if Vic does retire. Good luck GB! Get ready for your corners to play as soft as possible and allow qb’s to complete 80% of their passes!” a fan wrote.
Gannon’s hiring is receiving mixed reactions from fans. While some are not happy with the Packers’ decision, others know what he’s capable of.
“Gannon’s Eagles defense was nasty — 70 sacks & No. 1 pass D in ’22. If he brings even 80% of that disguises/blitz energy to GB, this secondary + edge rush could be scary. Fingers crossed he’s a WAY better DC than HC. Go Pack,” a fan wrote.
“Big win for Green Bay. He didn’t have much to work with in Arizona,” a fan wrote.
This will be Gannon’s second stint as a team’s defensive coordinator after his noteworthy work with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Matt LaFleur is Thrilled to Have Jonathan Gannon
Gannon went 15-36 in his three years with the Arizona Cardinals as their head coach. But that record doesn’t represent his ability as a defensive coordinator. Which is why Matt LaFleur, the Packers head coach, is excited to have him on his coaching staff.
After the hiring was made official, LaFleur released a statement via his team to welcome Gannon to the family.
“We are thrilled to add Jonathan Gannon to our coaching staff. He possesses tremendous experience as an NFL coordinator and head coach,” LaFleur wrote.
LaFleur also welcomed his wife, Gina, and their three children, Rocco, Lola, and Angelo. He stated that he’s confident in Gannon’s leadership qualities and expertise on the defensive side of the game.
