Back in 2018, New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel’s wife, Jen, revealed an unusual behavior of him, which helped her to identify a possible concussion. According to Jen, instead of showing toughness, he would become kind.
“I always knew when he had a concussion because he would be really nice,” Jen said in an interview with The Tennessean in January 2018. “Nice to the point of weird.”
The observation stood out most during a game day incident on Nov. 24, 2012, in Columbus, Ohio. Although Mike’s team won, he appeared almost disoriented as he hugged her.
The unusual demeanor came after a chaotic sequence earlier that day. Vrabel had suffered a deep cut on his forehead during pregame warmups. Back then, Mike was the Buckeyes defensive line coach and after a 26-21 victory over Michigan, he head-butted a player who was wearing a helmet.
The wound continued to bleed during the game. Blood was visible through a bandage on his face. The head-butt caused a laceration to the bridge of his nose and required stitches.
Reportedly, Jen in a now-deleted tweet on Dec. 6, 2012 posted an image of Mike’s injury and joked about the decision.
“Best not to head-butt a guy w/ a helmet on when you aren’t wearing one!!,” she wrote.

Mike and Jennifer “Jen” Vrabel have been married since 1999.
The couple met while attending Ohio State University in the early 1990s. At the time, Mike was a star on the football team and Jen was a member of the Buckeyes’ volleyball team.
They have two sons, Tyler and Carter. Both of whom followed in their parents’ athletic footsteps by playing college football and baseball, respectively.
Before coaching career, Mike Vrabel was a pillar of the Patriots’ defense during their championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004.
After a stint coaching at Ohio State, Vrabel climbed the NFL ranks.
While working as the head coach of the Titans (2018-2023), he was named the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year after leading them to the AFC’s no. 1 seed.
In a full circle moment, Vrabel was named head coach of the Patriots in 2025. He took the team to Super Bowl LX, though they ultimately fell to the Seahawks 29-13.
Mike Vrabel Recently Faced Heavy Scrutiny Involving Photos of Him and Reporter Dianna Russini in Arizona
On April 7, Page Six shared photos of Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini at a luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona. The pictures were from March 28.
They were first seen having breakfast around 10:15 a.m. Later, they were also spotted at the resort pool and a private rooftop bungalow.
Both Vrabel and Russini denied the rumors.
After the photos came out, The Athletic started an internal review.
On April 14, Russini resigned from her job. On April 21, Vrabel spoke to reporters and said he had “difficult conversations” with his family. The next day, he told ESPN that he is starting personal counseling to become the “best husband, father, and coach.”
Because of this, he will miss Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft. He has given his draft duties for the final rounds to Eliot Wolf and Ryan Cowden.
