Former Heisman Winner Makes Bold Case for Fernando Mendoza to Start in Week 1 Over Kirk Cousins

Fernando Mendoza is now officially a Raider after the franchise selected him as the No.1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Mendoza had a great college football season in 2025 as he not only secured the Heisman trophy but also an undefeated national championship run.

Many fans and analysts are divided on the question of whether Mendoza should be given the starting quarterback position or should he first develop behind Kirk Cousins for a few weeks and then take the steering wheel in his hands.

In a conversation with Colin Cowherd, Robert Griffin III shared his thoughts on when Mendoza should start with the Raiders and said:

“I do think the Raiders winning 10 games is out of the question but I think they only win 10 games if Fernando Mendoza is the starter Day 1. And the reason I say that is you talked about bringing in Tyler Linderbaum. Well, that takes a little bit off the quarterback when it comes to diagnosing the defense, the run fronts, where’s the pressure coming from?
“Not that Fernando Mendoza can’t do that. We certainly know that Kirk Cousins has experience doing that. But I think Fernando brings this team the identity that they need from the quarterback position from a leadership standpoint. This guy’s willing to do anything it takes to help his team win games.”

Maxx Crosby Makes Thoughts Clear on Fernando Mendoza Joining the Raiders

On Tuesday’s edition of “The Rush,” Maxx Crosby shared his thoughts on Fernando Mendoza’s addition to the Raiders.

Crosby called Mendoza’s situation “the worst-kept secret” in the league and said that while it wasn’t a surprise that he is joining the team, everybody is fired up about it.

The Raiders’ veteran player also shared that he had a great conversation with Mendoza when he went to the facility for a visit.

“I got to chop it up with him a little bit, and then on draft night, got on FaceTime and talked to him,” Crosby said.

Crosby then said he is very excited for Mendoza, to take him under his wing and help his development.
