After he led the Indiana Hoosiers to their first-ever national title during an undefeated run that also saw him win the Heisman Trophy, many are hyped with Fernando Mendoza as the projected No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft. That pick goes to the Las Vegas Raiders, and even the owners personally went to the national championship game to see Mendoza play, even co-owner Tom Brady.
However, not all are impressed with the Indiana quarterback, and that includes Philadelphia Eagles legend LeSean McCoy. During the “Speakeasy” podcast, the retired running back and podcast analyst revealed that he is not fond of the look of how Mendoza plays, stating that he fails the “eye test.”
“When I watch [Mendoza] though. When I watch the player. The eye test. I want everyone to hear what I’m saying. You can always get better. But the eye test? Don’t tell me… he’s the no. 1 pick overall.” he said.
He added that this undefeated run was more because of Curt Cignetti but added that he was happy for the Hoosiers for winning that Natty.
Bomani Jones Also Unimpressed With Projected No. 1 Pick Fernando Mendoza
It is not just LeSean McCoy who does not think that Fernando Mendoza will do well, as sports journalist and podcaster Bomani Jones is also unimpressed with the quarterback, as he explained during an episode of “The Right Time with Bomani Jones.”
“I know what the no. 1 pick in the draft look like. That ain’t it. Even if you think Cam Ward’s not going to be that guy, you look at Cam Ward with the Titans and you’re like ‘That guy was the no. 1 pick in the draft.’ You see that,” he said. “Mendoza. Eww. I don’t know.”
Despite this criticism, Mendoza is still poised to be picked No. 1 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders, whose owners are certainly paying attention to him. Many experts also believe that he is currently the best quarterback prospect in the draft after leading Indiana to a 17-0 record and a Big Ten title and a National Championship, in addition to that Heisman.
