The Detroit Lions-Pittsburgh Steelers game ended with a controversy that has grabbed headlines. DK Metcalf, the wide receiver for the Steelers, was seen swiping at a Lions fan in the stands right before halftime.
Since then, many theories have been floating around, and fans are coming up with their own reasoning behind the same. On a recent episode of Nightcap, Chad Johnson provided some insight into the incident, which might be more believable.
During his discussion on the topic with Shannon Sharpe, Johnson said that he doesn’t condone such behavior and players should not hit fans. At the same time, he said he understands what made Metcalf lose his temper.
“I’m not condoning putting hands on the fan or punching the fan,” Johnson said. “But he did call him a racial slur, he called him the N-word, and he did call his mama the C-word. And with those words exchanged, the fan saying that, I think that’s where the action occurred.”
There are rumors that the NFL might take some action against Metcalf, and Johnson also believes that the league will be stepping in to address the matter. Sharpe and Johnson believe that it’s important to know exactly what was said that led to the altercation.
The NFL legends are hoping that the cameras and microphones around the spot would have picked up on the words exchanged before Metcalf punched the fan. It will be crucial to know the details before punishing Metcalf for taking a swing or the fan for allegedly saying a racial slur.
Interestingly, Johnson hinted that he got the “word” from Metcalf himself, who told him that the fan called him the N-word and disrespected his mother as well.
The Fan’s Side of the DK Metcalf Altercation Story
After the game, Metcalf didn’t speak to the reporters, which would’ve provided more clarity on the matter. However, the Detroit Free Press reached out to the fan and got his side of the story in this drama.
The fan named Ryan Kennedy of Pickney, Michigan, said that he only called Metcalf by his government name, and that rattled him so much that he decided to make it physical.
“He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby,” the fan said.
It’ll be interesting to see how the league deals with it because if Metcalf’s allegations are true, then the fan must be appropriately punished. On the other hand, if Metcalf did swipe at him without any good reason, then he should be handed appropriate punishment as well.
