Browns Insider Predicts Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz’s Shocking Exit Amid Todd Monken’s Hire As HC

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz expressed his disappointment after being overlooked as the team’s possible next head coach, as the franchise hired Todd Monken to take charge. The Browns fired Kevin Stefanski as head coach following a disappointing 5-12 season.

After Stefanski was dismissed, many predicted Schwartz to get the promotion, but the franchise went outside and hired Monken. NFL insiders Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported that the Browns’ defensive coordinator was “visibly upset, said his goodbyes inside the building, and told other coaches he doesn’t plan to return under Monken.”

On Wednesday, Browns insider Tony Grossi believes Schwartz will not return as the defensive coordinator in 2026.

“I’m leaning toward that he’s dead set against it,” Grossi said. “You know, the next thing
that’s going to happen, and this will trigger what ultimately happens, is if San Francisco calls and requests to interview Jim as their defensive coordinator. To me, that would be the prime position for him, to join Kyle Shanahan with a Super Bowl-ready team.”

Despite Schwartz reportedly wanting out, he is still under contract with the Browns and should the franchise deny requests to be interviewed as well, the defensive coordinator would have no choice but to work under Monken.

Myles Garrett Reacts After Browns Overlooked Jim Schwartz for Todd Monken

Myles Garrett reportedly enjoyed playing under Jim Schwartz, as he even set a sack record in 2025. After learning about Todd Monken’s hiring and reports claiming that Schwartz won’t return as Browns DC in 2026, Garrett posted a picture on Instagram in which the man is looking down in disappointment. It might be his reaction to the personnel change at the top and Schwartz’s potentially not returning for the 2026 season.

It is never healthy when the front office and the team are not on the same page. The Browns will have to bridge the gap and eliminate any uneasiness in the locker room. They might have to talk to Schwartz about leaving, as it seems that the team’s top defensive star enjoyed working under him.
