Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition has given a twist to its cover, deciding to feature the wives and partners of several top NFL stars. The magazine has decided to focus on the lives of these athletic stars’ partners from a different angle than they’re usually covered, one that tends to lean towards the frivolity and opulence of their lives.
The press release from the outlet about the February digital cover reads:
“The groundbreaking covers celebrate women who transcend the outdated ‘wives and girlfriends’ label. These are entrepreneurs, athletes, creatives, activists, tastemakers and powerhouses shaping culture far beyond the sidelines.”
“Once a title rooted in proximity, ‘WAG’ has evolved into a symbol of influence, independence, and impact. This new generation is building brands, leading philanthropic initiatives, dominating business and entertainment, and reshaping the intersection of sports, fashion, and culture. From chart-topping music to trailblazing leadership across industries, these women are rewriting the narrative and refusing to be defined by anyone else’s legacy,” it adds.
Ronika Love, Brittany Mahomes, Christen Goff, Claire Kittle, Haley Cavinder, and Normani are the ones appearing in the new issue of the magazine. A majority of them are athletes in their own right, with Jake Ferguson’s fiancée, Haley, being the biggest example, having had a prolific college basketball career with Fresno State and Miami.
Ronika is a former volleyball player for the University of Oregon and the San Diego Mojo in the U.S. Pro Volleyball Federation. Brittany was a Division II soccer player at UT-Tyler and then at the Icelandic women’s football league. Finally, Claire was a college basketball player at Iowa.
Brittany Mahomes on What it Means to be the WAG of an NFL Star
Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, spoke with the magazine about what it means to be the significant other of an NFL star.
According to her, this isn’t as easy a role as some people believe.
“I think being the significant other to an NFL player is an incredibly hard role, and we take on a lot of important stuff behind the scenes that people don’t get to see,” she told the magazine. “But we also get to enjoy life and do things that we love, too.”
She isn’t just a partner to the league’s premier signal-caller, but an influencer and an entrepreneur in her own right. She is a co-owner of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current, in a way keeping in touch with her own passion for a different kind of football.
