Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever lost 111-109 to the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday. It was their eighth loss of the season and fourth at home, but the biggest story from the night was about poor officiating and Clark’s injury.
Former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason also chimed in on the raging discussion, taking a firm stand against the treatment Clark has been receiving in the league. Esiason went as far as to suggest that Caitlin Clark should consider leaving the WNBA.
“If I were Caitlin Clark, I would seriously consider going to play overseas somewhere and get the royal treatment. … She’s a straight white basketball player. And she is not being treated with any sort of respect,” he said on CBS Sports Network.
Most fans echoed his sentiment, but a handful of them believe that Caitlin Clark cries for fouls and that the league would be better without her.
“Yes please go overseas tired of seeing her crying for fouls and the fake tough guy act just clown behavior,” a fan wrote.
“It’s been 3 years and she still isn’t even the best player on her team and can’t defend anyone. Not to mention she’s a point guard and has more turnovers than anyone in the league,” a fan wrote.
“It was a hard foul but good Lord…,” a fan wrote.
“I wish she would start her own league. Why send somebody that good overseas? Elevate the game of basketball with the best female players in the world right here at home,” a fan wrote.
“Boomer been saying the quiet part via megaphone for awhile now,” a fan wrote.
Many fans believe that the league has failed to protect its biggest asset. At the postgame interview, head coach Stephanie White added her take to the argument. She said:
“We have a generational talent and WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots [against her] right there that weren’t called. … Absolutely unacceptable.”
The growing concern among fans is that Clark is officiated differently from any other player in the league.
Boomer Esiason Believes Players are Jealous of Caitlin Clark
Esiason said that some players might be jealous of Caitlin Clark, which motivates them to go against her without caring about the rules.
“I know that Caitlin makes a ton of money off the court in terms of endorsements and rightfully so, but I think there’s a petty jealousy,” Esiason added.
During a loose-ball scramble, Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas pushed her fist into Clark’s neck while she was down and then stepped over her. Moments later, Valeriane Ayayi closed out on Clark’s three-point attempt. The superstar landed on Ayayi’s foot, but the refs refused to upgrade it to a reckless closeout.
Caitlin Clark had 19 points and eight assists in the game but only played 20 minutes. She left the game in the third quarter and did not return.
