On their way to this year’s Super Bowl, the Seattle Seahawks dominated on defense as they shut down all their opponents, one after the other. The team had one of the most stifling defenses this year and it was so good that they made it to the Super Bowl. The question now is, how does the 2025 team’s defense rank overall in Super Bowl history?
There is what is called the DVOA, which stands for “Defense-adjusted Value Over Average,” which measures how efficient a team is by “comparing the success of every single play to a league average, adjusted for situation and quality of opponent.”
FTN Fantasy’s Aaron Schatz broke down the numbers of he best defenses in the league, all the way up to 1978, and he included their regular season ratings and posted the results on X. The rankings included teams that made it to the Super Bowl, though not all won it.
So how does the 2025 Seattle Seahawks rank? According to Aaron Schatz, they are ranked No. 6 overall.
This was all about the numbers, and it included some legendary defenses, with the 1991 Washington Redskins at No. 1 and the feared “46” defense of the 1985 Chicago Bears at No. 2. The 2007 New England Patriots, which failed to win the Super Bowl after that loss to the New York Giants, went No. 3, while the 1989 49ers and the 1996 Packers went No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Current Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is known for his defense, as he also served in the No. 7 defense in that lust, the 2023 Baltimore Ravens, which did lose to the Kansas City Chiefs that season.
2025 Seattle Seahawks Could Rival Their 2010s Legendary ‘Legion of Boom’ Defense
The 2013 Seattle Seahawks had a legendary defense called the “Legion of Boom,” and it was so stifling that it shutdown many opponents enroute to a Super Bowl win. This season, Seattle also has a legendary defense that they have dubbed the “Dark Side,” and it could possibly rival that 2013 defense.
That team routed Peyton Manning-led 2013 Broncos to a final score of 43-8, with the Broncos only scoring one touchdown. This year’s team is a throwback to that era, and they have one of the best rushing defenses ever, showing that the Seahawks could still prevent opponents from scoring at will.
Both teams could bully opposing offensive players as a collective, but one of them has already proven itself with a Super Bowl win. Now, this “Dark Side” squad needs to win one so the comparison could be more proper.
