The Washington Wizards have the opportunity to pick first in the 2026 NBA Draft, which is touted to be one of the most talented classes. AJ Dybantsa is expected to be the top pick this offseason after he had a good season individually, averaging 25.5 points and 6.8 rebounds. However, as per a recent update, the team is reportedly open to trading the No. 1 draft pick.
Earlier, several rumors on social media claimed that Dybantsa wanted to stay in Utah after college and that the Utah Jazz would be his preferred choice. His draft lottery day expression also went viral on social media, where he did not seem excited with the Wizards getting the top pick.
The Wizards have now highlighted their wish on the same line. Fullcourtpass shared the update on X and wrote:
The Wizards are sending out signals that they’re willing to deal the number one pick, but it may NOT be the Jazz who move up”
Half of that update is good for Dybantsa, but the franchise has made it clear that Utah might not move up if the Wizards trade their first pick. The Memphis Grizzlies have the third pick, while the Chicago Bulls will pick next. The Wizards might instead go for Cameron Boozer or Darryn Peterson, depending on the team’s more immediate needs.
Utah Jazz reportedly in talks with Wizards for trading No. 1 pick
The conversations among teams have already begun before NBA teams take their picks on June 23 and 24. The Wizards are looking to draft their preferred player, probably Darryn Peterson, and get another piece in the deal if they decide to trade their top pick. As per NBA journalist Marc J. Spears, via Andscape:
“The Jazz have reached out to the Washington Wizards, who have the No. 1 pick, about potentially trading up to land the former BYU standout, a source said.”
Even though Dybantsa struggled from deep in the 2025 NCAA season, shooting 33%, he can be one of the most talented two-way wings in the league. The Utah Jazz, who already have good shooting wings in Ace Bailey, Keyonte George, and Lauri Markkanen, need more paint presence to space the floor better.
Moreover, fans noticed Dybantsa’s expression on draft lottery day, which went viral on social media. He did not seem pleased with the Wizards getting the top pick and having an opportunity to draft him. The franchise has a real opportunity to turn its future around after it acquired Anthony Davis and Trae Young in trades. With someone like Dybantsa in the paint, the roster will find a better balance.
