Pat Riley is widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in NBA history. His time with the Los Angeles Lakers cemented that legacy, especially during the Showtime era when the team dominated the league. The Lakers recently honored him with an eight-foot bronze statue in Star Plaza, recognizing the five championships he won with the franchise, one as a player and four as head coach.
In nine seasons (1981-1990) on the sidelines, Riley led the Lakers to four titles and seven NBA Finals appearances. With that kind of success, it’s fair to wonder why he didn’t remain the team’s coach even longer.
Ironically, the reason was the very success he helped create.
The Lakers’ success witnessed a rise in Riley’s fame and opportunities outside of basketball. He himself became a celebrity, appearing in commercials, writing books, and doing media appearances. Over time, that attention began to create tension within the organization and the locker room. Riley later admitted that he may have let the popularity affect him.
“Fame can grab hold of you, but it can manifest itself into a real personality change,” Riley said. “I was starting to grow where I was in commercials, and I was doing this thing and that. We were in the playoffs, and I did a four-hour interview trying to sell the book the night before a game.
“I get all over somebody else if they did it, but I went ahead and did it, but that’s where I have gotten to, and I thought I could handle it. I think all the players got a little upset with all the attention that I was drawing to myself. I began to lose myself a little, thinking it was me, and I thought I was the reason that we [the Lakers] are successful.”
After working as a television commentator for a year, he returned to coaching with the New York Knicks from 1991-1995. He later had two separate head coaching stints with the Miami Heat from 1995-2003 and again from 2005-2008, winning another championship in 2006.
He stepped down from coaching in 2008, allowing Erik Spoelstra to fill in for him. Since then, Riley has remained deeply involved with the Heat as team president, continuing to contribute to the franchise as part of the front office.
Pat Riley reflects on his stint with the Los Angeles Lakers
Despite the way his run with the Los Angeles Lakers came to a close, Pat Riley looks back on his time with the Purple & Gold with nothing but appreciation.
“The time has gone so fast,” Riley said. “I feel like everything I’ve ever done, I’ve been blessed. I was surrounded by greatness.”
The respect clearly goes both ways. During Sunday’s tribute, team owner Jeanie Buss praised Riley not only for his role in the franchise’s success but for the lasting mark he left on the organization.
“Pat really was a guardian angel for this franchise,” Buss said. “The epitome of an era, the stylish leader of the Showtime Lakers, Pat did it all with flair and swagger.”
