Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ayo Dosunmu left Wednesday’s Game 2 against the San Antonio Spurs in the first half. As the teams prepared to step out on the court for the second, the Timberwolves announced he was questionable to return.
Entering this contest, the breakout guard was dealing with a right calf injury, which had sidelined him for Game 6 of the Timberwolves’ first-round series against the Nuggets and Game 1 of the Spurs series.
The Timberwolves announced that he was iffy to return on Wednesday due to a right heel injury. It may have been an aggregation of the same injury that had him on the injury report for the past three games. If that’s the case, it’s a massive blow for Minnesota as it might limit Dosunmu’s availability for the foreseeable future.
Dosunmu was the Timberwolves’ leading points per game scorer before Wednesday’s Game 2. In five games, he averaged 21.8 points and 4.0 assists on 60.9% shooting, including 54.5% from 3-point range.
However, he struggled in Game 2. In 10 minutes of the first half, Ayo Dosunmu went scoreless after missing his four shots from the field. A steal was all he had on his box score with no other significant contribution. He was also underwhelming on the defensive end of the floor.
While there were no clear signs of it, Dosunmu may have been limited due to his right calf injury.
Ayo Dosunmu could be risking an Achilles injury if he attempts to play again
Ayo Dosunmu’s heel injury suggests he’s probably aggravated his right calf issue. The calf muscle connects to the heel via the Achilles tendon. The Timberwolves may have detected a potential disaster early on. If Dosunmu pushes to play again in this contest or the next, he might risk an Achilles injury, which could be a devastating blow not just for this season, but the next one too.
Dosunmu is a free agent in the 2026 offseason, so it would individually impact him more than it would impact the team. He might not land a lucrative contract as many have predicted after a solid showing with the Timberwolves following his midseason trade.
