Just before the stroke of midnight, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Giannis Antetokounmpo has been traded to the Miami Heat for “a haul of players and picks.” After several months of discontentment in Milwaukee, the two-time MVP now heads to a new home in the Eastern Conference.
In the days leading up to this blockbuster trade, the Heat had reportedly been trying to beat the Boston Celtics to the punch. According to Charania, the Bucks found Miami’s offer to be more enticing as far as sustainability is concerned.
“The Bucks chose the Heat’s offer in order to bring more flexibility and big-picture approach with controlled contracts and long-term competitiveness for new coach Taylor Jenkins to imagine the next generation of Milwaukee,” Charania wrote.
In this deal, Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis are heading to the Heat, while Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis are Milwaukee-bound. The Bucks will also receive the Heat’s no. 13 pick in this year’s NBA draft, two future first-round picks, one second-round selection, and a pick swap.
Antetokounmpo, who will be playing on just his second NBA team, is set to form a fearsome frontcourt tandem with three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo. Meanwhile, the status of first-time All-Star Norman Powell is up in the air, as he is an unrestricted free agent.
Boston Celtics Reportedly Dangled Jaylen Brown in Package to Acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo
As for the Celtics, Charania reported that they offered no less than a franchise player in their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“The Celtics aggressively pursued Giannis, offering Milwaukee a package featuring 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks, sources tell ESPN. The Bucks seriously negotiated with two finalists in recent weeks: Miami and Boston, which were both on Antetokounmpo’s list of preferred destinations.”
Brown, who averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game last season, dramatically increased his stock as he joined the MVP conversation.
Despite this, Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam reportedly had his misgivings. According to insider Kevin O’Connor, Haslam had no interest in risking “Jaylen Brown wanting out of Milwaukee in a year after dealing with Giannis and Myles Garrett trade demands.”
The aftermath of Brown dealing with this situation will be a headline coming out of Boston, but on this night, the spotlight belongs to the Heat and their acquisition of the Greek Freak.
