What Charges Is Damon Jones Facing? Former NBA Veteran Pleads Guilty in Shocking Betting Investigation

Gambling in the NBA has caught up several names in the past, and now, former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones has gotten involved in another betting controversy. He pleaded guilty in front of a federal judge to giving some insider information to gamblers. The coach was arrested last year after the authorities launched a widespread probe into betting and gambling.

Jones had an 11-year career in the league and played for 10 different teams. He worked as an assistant and shooting coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014 to 2018, including their championship season in 2016. He appeared before a federal judge in Brooklyn and admitted to one count of wire fraud conspiracy. His sentencing was set for Jan. 6, with the government sentencing him to 21-27 months behind bars.

Courtside Buzz shared the update on X and wrote:

“BREAKING: Former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a federal charge that he gave inside information to gamblers.”

Besides Damon Jones, the Portland Trail Blazers’ head coach, Chauncey Billups, and the Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier are also among the defendants. While Damon Jones admitted to his guilt, the charges against Rozier have gone even more intense, with the latest filings alleging bribery.

After Damon Jones’ admission, Terry Rozier faces additional charges

According to The Athletic, an attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York revealed that a superseding indictment against Terry Rozier would be filed, stating that he “solicited and accepted a bribe.” The claim was presented after Rozier’s legal team requested that the court dismiss the case.

Jim Trusty, Rozier’s attorney, talked to the media about the new charge and said:

“Our motion to dismiss is based on the idea that they picked an invalid legal theory to prosecute Terry Rozier. We’ll see what they do to try to fix that in the superseding indictment, but I expect we’ll have problems with it.”

Gambling in the NBA has ruined the careers of several athletes, and the league has strict policies against such practices. Even though the NBA doesn’t particularly ban its players from investing in such companies, the repercussions are huge if one is found to be involved in the process.
