The Golden State Warriors received the worst possible news Monday night when it was confirmed that Jimmy Butler tore his right ACL after going down with an injury during a game against the Miami Heat. This rules the six-time All-Star forward out for the season and puts the team in a precarious position as it looks to maximize Steph Curry’s greatness.
The timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate as the team had finally gotten on a roll and had won 12 of its past 16 games. With Butler out, it’s very unlikely for the Warriors to remain competitive. So, the question begs to be asked, who will fill in the void left behind by Jimmy Butler’s absence?
Will Golden State coach Steve Kerr do the unthinkable and go back to Jonathan Kuminga who has reportedly requested a trade? If that is indeed the case, it will be interesting to see how he fits back into the rotation. Kuminga hasn’t played since Dec. 20 because of a combination of injuries and DNPs.
Kerr could also look toward his role players, particularly Gui Santos. The Brazilian is nursing a left knee injury that he suffered against the New York Knicks. He is expected to return soon and could see more playing minutes.
With all that in mind, here’s a look at the Warriors’ depth chart for the foreseeable future:
| Starter | 2nd | 3rd | |
| PG | Stephen Curry | Brandin Podziemski | Pat Spencer |
| SG | Moses Moody | Gary Payton II | Will Richard |
| SF | De’Anthony Melton DD | Buddy Hield | Moses Moody |
| PF | Draymind Green | Gui Santos (DD) | Al Horford |
| C | Quinten Post | Al Horford | Trayce Jackson-Davis |
How Did Jimmy Butler Get Injured?
Jimmy Butler suffered the right ACL tear at the 7:41 mark in the third quarter. He went down while trying to grab a pass and colliding with Heat guard Davion Mitchell. Butler twisted his ankle and lay on the floor in agony before being helped off the court.
Despite Butler’s absence, the Warriors managed to put together a 135-112 win. Golden State is now 25-19 on the season and has won four straight games. With another game scheduled Tuesday against the Toronto Raptors, it will be interesting to see how the team copes with Butler’s injury and whom Steve Kerr turns toward to replace the forward’s production.
