The Golden State Warriors’ pursuit of LeBron James might get difficult, as the franchise is reportedly re-signing De’Anthony Melton on a two-year, $11 million deal, according to ESPN analyst Shams Charania. So, the front office may have even less cap space to accommodate LBJ’s contract.
Melton had injury issues with the Warriors, playing just 55 games in two seasons. Just a week into the 2024-25 season, he tore his ACL, an injury that carried over into the next season. Last season, he managed to play 49 games, averaging a career-best 12.3 points, with 3.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
The ESPN analyst shared the news on Wednesday on X:
“Free agent guard De’Anthony Melton has agreed to a two-year, $11 million deal to return to the Golden State Warriors, sources tell ESPN. There is a player option in the season of the deal as well.”
The Warriors have around $26 million left in cap space before they hit the first apron. Even though James is estimated to be in the midlevel exception category, with a salary of around $15 million, the front office has yet to complete the roster.
Wizards’ decision on Anthony Davis might affect the Warriors’ chances with LeBron James
Several reports suggested that the Warriors might look to bring Anthony Davis and LeBron James together again to aim for another title. The idea of the Golden State pairing James with Steph Curry looked good, but the Washington Wizards have put a halt to the Warriors’ dreams.
On ESPN, analyst Ohm Youngmisuk shared the reports that the Wizards have taken Davis off the trade table. The center/forward was one of the top reasons James would have considered the option.
However, teaming with Steph Curry could still be on the NBA bucket list of the now-former Lakers forward. Meanwhile, the four-time NBA champion has been receiving interest from several franchises, including his former team, the Miami Heat. Only time will tell where James will be next season to fight for a fifth ring.
