The Philadelphia 76ers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 113-104 win over the Indiana Pacers at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. While Monday’s victory marked their first win of the six-game homestand, Philly fans would be more relieved by the events that took place after the final buzzer. The rumored beef between VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey turned out to be nothing more than noise.
After the nine-point win, Edgecombe crashed Maxey’s on-court interview to clear the air about the supposed beef between the two guards. The moment quickly turned playful, with Maxey leaning into the joke while both players laughed, making it clear that their chemistry was still intact.
“For the record, man, we do not hate each other,” Edgecombe said.
“I hate you. Don’t talk to me ever again, and go in the locker room,” Maxey hilariously responded.
The rumors initially gained traction during the Sixers’ Jan. 16 matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the first quarter, Maxey was frustrated after a defensive error made by the rookie. Edgecombe switched onto Maxey’s assignment instead of focusing on Donovan Mitchell, who ended up drilling a wide-open three-pointer. The mistake sparked a heated exchange between the two on the bench during a timeout.
While it was never clear what was said, videos suggested that tension was flaring. The intense verbal altercation, even though it never got physical, was enough to fuel speculation across social media.
Tyrese Maxey records historic stat line after receiving first-ever All-Star starter nod
On Monday, the NBA announced the 10 All-Star starters, and Tyrese Maxey was among the five selected from the Eastern Conference. The honor marks the second All-Star appearance of his career and his first time being named a starter.
That honor seemed to give Maxey an immediate boost in morale. Following the announcement, he put up a historic performance during the Sixers’ 113-104 win. Maxey finished with 29 points, eight assists and eight steals, a stat line achieved by only one other player in franchise history before, Allen Iverson.
Maxey joins Cade Cunningham, Jalen Brunson, Jaylen Brown, and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the other Eastern Conference All-Star starters. The group, however, will not be competing as a team. With the introduction of the new USA vs. World format, the All-Star Game will look different than in years before.
