Speculations about where LeBron James will play next season, if he does play, continue to grow now that the regular season is almost over. On Monday, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and Tim Bontemps wrote a lengthy article about James’ “free agency options” once his contract with the LA Lakers expires.
In the story, the NBA insiders noted that the four-time MVP “distanced himself from retirement talk during the All-Star Weekend.” If the 41-year-old superstar continues playing, they mentioned the Lakers, the Golden State Warriors, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the New York Knicks, the Denver Nuggets and the LA Clippers as his potential landing spots.
On Wednesday, LeBron James’ agent and confidante, Rich Paul, responded when asked to comment on that story via the “Game Over” podcast. Paul said:
“There’s no truth to any of it. First of all, I don’t know what’s happening. He don’t know either! We don’t even talk about it. … What he talks about more than anything is, ‘Just enjoy the moment.’
Paul continued:
“The man is playing minutes with his son. Meaningful minutes! The Lakers are 12-1 and playing well. Why are you talking about some stuff next year? … I don’t care what article is written. I don’t care what tweet is out there. Nobody knows nothing.”
When LeBron James failed to get an extension from the Lakers, Rich Paul gave ESPN’s Shams Charania insider information. The Klutch Sports CEO said that his client wants to win championships but also understands that the “Lakers are building for the future.”
Unlike James, the Lakers gave Luka Doncic a max extension, making the MVP contender the face of the franchise. The four-time NBA champ has also ceded control of the team to Doncic, a likely harbinger of what James’ career will look like as an aging superstar.
LeBron James said in February during the All-Star media availability that he doesn’t know what his future in basketball will be. Rich Paul, the trusted ally, is only echoing that statement.
Fans React to Rich Paul’s Statement About Not Knowing LeBron James’ Basketball Plans
Clips of Max Kellerman’s conversation with Rich Paul about LeBron James went viral, prompting fans to react. One fan wrote:
“F**k Rich Paul. If the Lakers went 6-6, he’d be having a totally different conversation, throwing the Lakers under the bus, etc.”
Another fan added:
“Stop the bulls**t Rich Paul.”
One more fan continued:
“Nice try, Rich. We know y’all will be back in the home state next year.”
Another fan commented:
“I don’t believe him.”
One fan tweeted:
“That’s a lie. He is coming back because he wants all the attention for his last season. He knows it.”
Paul made some intriguing comments in previous episodes of “Mind the Game.” He said in December that the Lakers were not championship contenders and even doubted their capacity to reach the Western Conference finals. In mid-January, he caused a social media storm after urging the Lakers to trade Austin Reaves.
Now that the Lakers are doing well and LeBron James has played a key role in the team’s success, fans couldn’t help but criticize Paul for his latest comment.
