Michael Jordan vs LeBron James: Who Has the Better Record in NBA Playoffs and Finals?

The debate between Michael Jordan and LeBron James has been a staple in the NBA world. Fans of both legends often butt heads on social media, comparing the two multiple-time NBA champions. Now that King James has made another playoff in his career, let’s see the playoff performances of the two superstars.

Michael Jordan vs LeBron James: Postseason records

Michael Jordan played 13 playoffs in his career, in comparison to 19 for LeBron James, including the 2025-26 season. However, Jordan had played 15 seasons in total, and James has played 23 thus far. In his 13 seasons, Air Jordan collected six championships with the Chicago Bulls, along with six NBA Finals MVPs.

Moreover, Mike was the regular-season MVP in five of those seasons, when the Bulls won the championship. In 1997, the only year when he lost the MVP honor to Karl Malone, he beat the MVP’s team, the Utah Jazz, 4-2 in the Finals. A mark of domination!

With a 119-60 record in postseason games, the 1988 NBA Defensive Player of the Year averaged 33.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 5.7 assists.

James, on the other hand, has played 292 games (184-108) in the NBA playoffs, averaging 28.4 points, nine rebounds, and 7.2 assists. He has also won the Finals MVP every time his team has won the championship, giving him four Finals MVPs and four NBA championships.

However, James’ titles came with three different teams: the Miami Heat, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the LA Lakers. The Cavaliers’ ring is special as it is the only title the franchise has thus far. Moreover, that win came against a peak Golden State Warriors, featuring the Splash Brothers.

Jordan’s opponents also included some big names as he defeated Magic Johnson’s Lakers in 1991, Clyde Drexler’s Portland Trail Blazers in 1992, and Charles Barkley’s Phoenix Suns in 1993 in his first three-peat. Later, he also won the finals over Gary Payton and Karl Malone.

While it’s difficult to say who has a better record in the playoffs, Jordan’s impact and domination were unmatched. However, James has been perseverant and consistent in his playoff results. LBJ has failed to overcome the lust hurdle multiple times in his career. Jordan has clearly been more successful in converting his playoff runs to titles.

This time, James has another opportunity, as the Lakers look good with Luka Doncic’s efficient shooting and the team’s holistic offense. Head coach JJ Reddick might be happy with how the team has played in this final phase of the regular season. They will look to make a strong start to the playoffs after a decent break.
