NBA analyst Jason Timpf had his reservations about LeBron James joining Jaylen Brown in Philadelphia this offseason. While discussing his potential landing spots on Sunday’s episode of Colin Cowherd’s podcast, Timpf joked that James might get frustrated at times alongside Brown because of his shot-making decisions.
“LeBron going to Philly makes Philly so much better and so much more compelling as a championship contender,” Timpf said. “Denver’s unrealistic, Golden State comes with a bunch of question marks. So if it’s between Cleveland, Philly and Miami, Philly is definitely his best chance to win and it’s certainly a lot better than Cleveland. I just think there’s some clunkiness there (in Philly).
“I think LeBron would have some nights in Philly where he’s like, ‘Oh, I hated 13 of the shots that Tyrese [Maxey] and Jaylen [Brown] took tonight.’ I think he’d have some nights, where he calls his wife and he’s like, ‘I’m in Philly tonight and I just stood in the corner while Jaylen Brown shot us out of a game.'”
The 76ers do make a compelling case as the most talented team. James also fills a position need at power forward. However, with so many bona fide All-Stars, borderline MVP talent and an emerging sophomore in VJ Edgecombe, there could be dynamic issues within the 76ers’ starting lineup with James.
All five players are at their best on the ball, and unless James is willing to become a fourth or fifth option on most nights, the fit in Philadelphia won’t work. There were questions about James’ fit with the Los Angeles Lakers as a third option. If he joins a stacked team like Philadelphia, similar questions will persist.
76ers executive makes public pitch to LeBron James in front of his agent, Rich Paul
Every team seems engaged in pursuing LeBron James. Coaches, players and executives have admitted or hinted their teams’ interest in the four-time MVP after he confirmed his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason.
76ers executive Bob Myers started the series of public recruitment monologues. On Wednesday, while appearing on James’ agent, Rich Paul’s “Game Over” podcast, Myers suggested that the 76ers will be the player’s best shot at winning a fifth championship.
“If he was here, I’d say I honestly believe this is your best chance to win,” Myers said. “You have to decide all the other things. ‘Cause it’s his life. … What I would just say is, if it’s about winning, let’s talk about this team. Because you can win here in Philly.”
Since Bob Myers’ pitch, Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson and Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg have addressed their teams’ links to James. Curry said they “would love to play together.” Green hung out with James on Friday and on Sunday, he admitted on his podcast that he made a “crazy” pitch.
Hours later, Atkinson teased a reunion, saying it was an “exciting” time for his team as they were involved in the James sweepstakes. Meanwhile, Lendeborg said the Warriors will be “glad” to have James.
