As LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul’s comments about the LA Lakers’ next trade deal, involving Austin Reaves, caught fire in the NBA world, the King seemed to have distanced himself from the wild idea. In a conversation with the media, James expressed his thoughts about Paul’s suggestion.
The high-profile NBA agent expressed his interest in Jaren Jackson Jr., along with Luka Doncic running the offense. Considering Jaren Jackson Jr.’s 5-year $239.9 million contract with the Grizzlies, it’s easier said than done. Paul suggested that the Lakers should consider moving Austin Reaves and withholding their last couple of first-round picks.
As Paul and James enjoy a good relationship off the court, the King was questioned about his views on his agent’s statements. While exiting Crypto.com Arena after the game against the Hawks, LeBron James stated that Paul’s words should be analyzed as his own and not as a reflection of James’ views. He added:
“I think you all know by now, Rich is his own man and what Rich says is not a direct reflection of me and how I feel. And I hope people know that. I hope people know that and if they’re not sensible to know that, then I don’t know what to tell them.”
James explained his relationship with the young Lakers guard, distancing himself from Paul’s statement.
“AR knows how I feel about him. All you got to do is look at us on the bench. Me and AR talk every single day. So, AR knows how I feel about him and I hope AR — or his camp — don’t look at me and think this is words from me are coming through Rich.”
LeBron James led the Lakers to victory after three consecutive losses with near triple-double numbers (31-9-10). Doncic has also looked in shape, but his efforts have not always found support from the rest of the team.
Austin Reaves’ injury concerns have tested the team’s offense, and hence, Paul’s statement met with immediate criticism from fans and analysts. Even one of Reaves’ agents from the AMR agency was seen talking to Rich Paul after the game.
LeBron James’ and Austin Reaves’ agent seen courtside after the game
One of Austin Reaves’ agents, Reggie Berry, was seen in conversation with Klutch Sports Group’s owner, Rich Paul, courtside after the game against the Hawks. As reported by ESPN analyst Dave McMenamin, the topic of the conversation was Paul’s trade idea involving Reaves.
The two agents were involved in a conversation for more than five minutes, but the content of it is still unknown. Reaves will be in free agency this summer and is expected to receive a max extension. Whether the team will execute Paul’s suggestion is still unknown, but it has surely opened a new debate in the league.
