76ers President Mike Gansey Gets Real on LeBron James’ True Impact on Phily’s All-Star Roster

Philadelphia 76ers president Mike Gansey shared his thoughts on LeBron James’ fit alongside Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid on Monday. Ever since the 76ers acquired Brown in a shocking trade with the Boston Celtics, several rumors have indicated that they are among the favorites to sign the 41-year-old James.

While on paper, it seems like an exciting proposition, the 76ers do appear to have certain flaws should James join the franchise. For starters, Philadelphia has three ball-dominant players in Maxey, Brown and Embiid. James also needs the ball to be at his best. It’s unlikely that he would take a backseat, especially since he’s arguably the best on-ball creator in that group of players. However, Gansey has no concerns.

“If he decides to come here, we’re going to be even better,” Gansey told The Athletic.

Gansey admitted he’s been in touch with James’ camp and agent, Rich Paul, since the 76ers traded for Brown.

“We’ve had conversations with Rich, really since the Jaylen trade,” he said.

He then moved on to his public recruitment pitch, calling James the “best player of all time.”

“We’d obviously love to have LeBron,” Gansey said. “I respect the heck out of him. In my opinion, he’s the best player of all time. I think his decision is dragging out because he has a lot of good options and he wants to figure it out. He would obviously add a lot to our team.”

Mike Gansey wasn’t sure about LeBron James’ ultimate decision, with other interested teams also having a legitimate chance. He believes James will consider his family’s preferences when taking a call on his future.

76ers could give LeBron James his best shot at a title, but will he agree to be a fourth or fifth option?

The 76ers have the most stacked team among suitors pursuing LeBron James. They have MVP-level players, defenders, size and shooting. Adding James bolsters the 76ers’ chance of winning the championship. They would have four players – Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and James – who can play at an MVP-caliber level on any given night.

Meanwhile, second-year guard VJ Edgecombe has the potential to become a borderline All-Star after a phenomenal rookie season, as he was the 76ers’ second-best scorer on many nights.

However, all of this would only work if James were willing enough to play as a fourth or fifth option on most nights. Edgecombe is a rising star, while Maxey and Brown are in their primes. Embiid may not be a bona fide MVP candidate, but he can still be decisive.

At 41, LeBron James can deliver an All-NBA effort, so it’s unclear whether he will accept an even smaller role than what he had with the Lakers last year. James admitted he had to adjust to play and wait for his opportunities with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves running the show.

The 76ers situation will likely be an amplified version of it.
