“I Don’t Think This Kid Is Subconsciously Trying to Sabotage His Own Career”: Dwyane Wade Shockingly Contradicts Erik Spoelstra’s Alarming Comments on Kel’el Ware

Kel’el Ware’s recent drop in performance has been a topic of discussion among Miami Heat fans, and now Dwyane Wade has joined the conversation. After their hard loss against the Boston Celtics, Heat head coach Eric Spoelstra suggested that the 2024 draft pick might be playing badly on purpose to demand more minutes. However, Heat veteran Dwyane Wade had something else to say to his analogy.

Discussing Ware’s situation and the coach’s comments on the NBA on Prime, Wade said that he didn’t think the youngster was deliberately playing badly. He added:

“The first part I understand lockstep about understanding the day need to be stacked for a young player. The second part I don’t understand of the subconscious I’m gonna play bad. I’ve watched Ware, I don’t know him personally but the kid was playing so well earlier in the year where It looked like he was a center piece. You hate to see it got right here. I don’t think he’s intentionally trying to play bad.”

Dwyane Wade said that a young player won’t try to jeopardize his career and playing time over trivial things:

“it feels like there’s a misunderstanding of where he is at this point in his career. I’m sure he’s frustrated. I don’t think this kid is subconsciously trying to out there a sabotage his minutes and own career. It’s hard to get a rhythm and flow when you don’t know it’s coming.”

Kel’el Ware seemed to have improved significantly from the last season when the 2025-26 season began, as he averaged 13.5 and 13.1 points in November and December last year. However, this month, his production has dipped by half with an average of 7.6 points and 7.3 rebounds.

Bam Adebayo continues to be the first preference on the team, which seems obvious given his output on both ends. However, he suffers from offensive slumps from time to time, which has led to major criticism.

Meanwhile, the Heat’s season has been a mixed bag with a 21-20 record, and the head coach thinks Ware’s slump is one of the factors.

“Sometimes you subconsciously play poorly,” Eric Spoelstra speaks on Kel’el Ware’s slump

Although Norman Powell, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro together put up 70 points, the Miami side couldn’t mount a comeback against the Celtics. After the Heat’s hard loss against the Celtics, Eric Spoelstra was asked about Kel’el Ware’s restricted minutes in the second half. He clarified:

“Look at the game. It was one matchup after another. It was a tough matchup for him in Boston, with all the coverages, and it was the same thing tonight.”

Spoelstra added that Ware would have to earn more minutes in the game:

Stack days, build those habits, make sure you’re ready, and play the minutes you’re playing to a point where it makes me want to play you more… Sometimes you subconsciously play poorly to say, ‘Hey, I’ll play poorly until you play me the minutes I think I deserve. Then I’ll play well.’ That’s not how it works.”

Kel’el Ware might have hit a rookie wall, which has been the case with a lot of young talents in the NBA. It will be interesting to see how his performance evolves going forward.
