The Golden State Warriors have had a tough couple of weeks. Over that span, they lost Jimmy Butler to a season-ending torn ACL and lost five of their last eight games.
However, the mood around the team got a lift in their most recent outing. Facing the Phoenix Suns on Thursday without Steph Curry, the Warriors showed real grit. After trailing by 14 points at the start of the fourth quarter, they stormed back to close out a 101-97 victory.
The Los Angeles Lakers have been trending in the opposite direction. Since kicking off an eight-game road trip on Jan. 20, the Purple & Gold have been rolling. They have won six of their last nine games, including a home win against the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday.
Fans missed out on a Steph Curry-LeBron James showdown in the first meeting between these two teams, which also happened to be their season opener. With James unavailable, Luka Doncic took over the offensive load, recording 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. However, the Warriors came out on top as Curry and Butler combined for 54 points in a 119-109 win.
This time around, the Lakers are expected to even the season series. Their recent form, along with Golden State’s injury issues, tilts the matchup in Los Angeles’ favor. The Warriors are expected to be without Curry and their newest addition, Kristaps Porzingis, while the Lakers remain favored even with Doncic sidelined.
