Spurs Remain Committed to De’Aaron Fox Despite Trade Rumors

There has been a lot of chatter recently about the future of De’Aaron Fox with the San Antonio Spurs.

Fox, 28, had a subpar outing in the NBA Finals, averaging 12.8 points, 6.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 34.3% from the field and 25.0% from three-point range.  Those struggles led many to believe it could be the end of the road for the veteran guard. However, that does not appear to be the case.

As reported by Michael C. Wright on Friday, the Spurs have made it clear they reportedly remain all-in on De’Aaron Fox despite his struggles late this season.

Wright reported that San Antonio “understands what life is without him” and views Fox as its “calming presence” and “closer,” citing a quote from Julian Champagnie.

“We want him to be that guy for us, that closer for us,” Champagnie said, per Wright. “[We] give him the space he needs and be there when he needs us. For the most part, it’s his world and we’re kind of living in it.”

While many blamed the NBA Finals loss on Fox, he was far from the only reason for the defeat. A number of contributing factors added up and surfaced at crucial moments, where San Antonio failed to sustain momentum against a Knicks team that made a habit of overwhelming opponents throughout the postseason.

Why the San Antonio Spurs Might Decide Not to Trade De’Aaron Fox

One of the other reasons why the San Antonio Spurs are unlikely to move De’Aaron Fox is that not many teams would be willing or able to take on his four-year, $229 million contract extension, which kicks in next season.

While his numbers this season have been modest, he still brings invaluable experience and leadership. That combination could have made him an attractive trade target for contending teams seeking a veteran presence, but it appears the Spurs are prioritizing stability over a potential move.
