The Philadelphia 76ers’ front office, including President of basketball operations Daryl Morey, made a shocking move during the midseason trade period, trading Jared McCain to the OKC Thunder for a 2026 first-round pick and three second-round picks. However, the guard has shown some serious shooting prowess in the new franchise, and several Philly fans have blamed Morey for that. A highlight of that dislike was seen during the 76ers’ last game.
The 76ers lost 111-126 to the New Orleans Pelicans, who are at the bottom of the Western Conference. Embiid has been out of the game since before the All-Star break due to his knee injury. The team has looked lacklustre without the 2023 NBA MVP on the floor, with a dismal 11-14 record.
Amid the offensive struggles of Tyrese Maxey, the home crowd had a different demand of the team, as a section of them was heard shouting “Fire Morey” at Smoothie King Center. A video came up on X, with a caption:
“”Fire Morey” chants break out among a section of Sixers fans in New Orleans as Philly loses by double digits to the 14-seeded Pelicans”
Morey and the management’s bid to duck the luxury tax bracket and the Jared McCain gamble might have cost more than what management expected. This has certainly fueled the protest against the President and calls for his exit.
On the other hand, McCain received a warm welcome in Oklahoma City and has felt at home. He scored a season-high 21 points against the Brooklyn Nets and helped the short-handed Thunder land a win.
Daryl Morey’s 76ers look in trouble without major pieces
The 76ers have now lost four in a row after a humiliating loss to the Pelicans. Even though Maxey has had the best season number-wise, the team has looked short-handed. Although Kelly Oubre Jr. has tried helping with scoring, his sudden offensive absence in a few games has taken the 76ers off their momentum.
VJ Edgecomb has had a much-needed impact immediately after getting drafted. However, George is out due to a suspension for violating anti-doping regulations, and Joel Embiid is nursing a sore knee.
Dominick Barlow is still learning to take responsibilities, and Andre Drummond is not a scoring center. All this has culminated in a major offensive struggle that the team will have to overcome quickly.
