Bruce Pearl Sounds Alarm on Darryn Peterson’s 2026 NBA Draft Outlook Despite No. 1 Pick Buzz

Kansas Jayhawks’ Darryn Peterson is one of the candidates for the first overall pick of the 2026 NBA Draft. Currently averaging 20.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, he’s definitely one of the best players in college basketball.

At first glance, he should be a sure choice for the first overall pick of the draft. However, there are some concerns surrounding his health and his tendency to suffer injuries. This Thursday, speaking on TNT Sports, Bruce Pearl explained that regardless of his ability, and although his draft stock will probably not be affected by his durability or lack of it, coaches will be taking a close look at the situation:

“I don’t think this will affect his draft stock, because I think everybody that I talk to in the league, he still looks like the No. 1 guy. But, if I was coaching in the NBA, I’m sorry, I would have some concerns. Missing 11 out of 24 games? For hamstrings, and quad pulls and illnesses? Just a long list of different things. My job is to coach a team, my job is to win a championship. General management can make another decision. I would be a little concerned… about how tough he is.”

Jamal Mashburn disagreed by saying that the injuries this season have been outside his control, with most of them being soft tissue issues. Jalen Rose took the entire opposite view, saying that having a soft tissue problem in college, when the volume of games is much smaller, it is a serious issue to think about when he moves to the NBA where he will have more games and face tougher opposition.

Jamal Mashburn Believes That Ability Trumps Injuries In Darryn Peterson’s Case

Jamal Mashburn, who was also on the panel with Pearl, took time to take Darryn Peterson’s side of the argument. For the former NBA player, it’s clear Peterson is a top player, potentially a generational talent, and teams will have to work around his fitness to have that talent on the court.

“You can prepare for a season, but you don’t know when an injury is coming. … For a kid like Darryn Peterson, I’m not necessarily concerned. I’d rather have him on the court and let him adjust to his body and what he can actually do,” Mashburn said. “He’s a premier talent at the end of the day. When he’s on the court, he’s probably the best player on the court at any particular moment. I’m not really concerned about him. One thing that I’ve learned in watching Kansas play is when he’s out of the lineup, they’ve all gotten better. And when he’s inserted, they know how to play around that as well.”

However, Jalen Rose’s concerns are also important. Will Darryn Peterson be able to maintain performance with a higher volume of games and tougher opposition while carrying fitness issues? These are questions for front offices and coaching staff to answer.
