Anthony Edwards Shares Honest Thoughts on Timberwolves Trading For Another Star After Playoffs Exit

Anthony Edwards shared his thoughts on whether the Timberwolves need to trade for another star following their playoff exit on Friday against the Spurs. Edwards was the only one putting up All-Star caliber numbers in the series that lasted six games. He averaged 23.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 0.7 steals on 46.9% shooting, including 37.5% from 3-point range.

While they don’t stand out and match his usual output, it’s worth noting that Edwards was dealing with knee injuries on both legs. Entering the playoffs, he had a right knee contusion. In Game 4 of the first round series against the Denver Nuggets, Edwards hyperextended his left knee and missed Games 5 and 6.

He returned weeks earlier than expected in Game 1 of the conference semis and gave the Timberwolves a fighting chance. However, Julius Randle, Jaden McDaniels, Rudy Gobert, Naz Reid and Ayo Dosunmu were major letdowns. Randle, in particular, was a bigger disappointment as he was the No. 2 option on the Timberwolves. He averaged a measly 13. 2 ppg on 34.2% shooting, including 19.0% from 3-point range.

McDaniels (14.8) and Reid (14.3) averaged more points than him. However, Anthony Edwards, who seemingly has every right to make demands, declined to request the font office for a marquee trade.

“Yeah, I feel like we’re good,” Edwards said when asked if he needs another co-star.

Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves to consecutive conference finals in 2024 and 2025 despite his No. 2 options changing from Karl-Anthony Towns to Julius Randle. In 2026, that streak ended.

Injuries played a part, but the lack of help around Edwards was more evident this series. Whether he wants that help or not, the Timberwolves would need another All-Star-level player to get to the next level if they are to beat teams like the OKC Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs.

Anthony Edwards’ Timberwolves expected to pursue blockbuster trades, Giannis Antetokounmpo tops wishlist

The Timberwolves are eyeing a massive trade this summer, as per the latest trade rumors. According to beat writer Jon Krawczynski, Giannis Antetokounmpo tops their wishlist. Many expect Antetokounmpo to get traded at the NBA draft in June.

The Timberwolves don’t have lucrative draft picks, but a package around Jaden McDaniels, Julius Randle, Terrence Shannon Jr., Ayo Dosunmu (sign-and-trade), the No. 28 pick in this year’s draft and the 2033 first-round pick.

The Timberwolves tried to pursue Antetokounmpo at last season’s February trade deadline, but failed. They didn’t have the package or picks at the time. The package won’t be as lucrative as other teams now, either. However, if Antetokounmpo lists Minnesota as one of his preferred destinations, the Bucks will likely accept the best offer from the Timberwolves.
