Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future has been one of the most talked about topics in the NBA season this season, and it continues to remain so after the regular season reached its midway point. While the one-time NBA champion hasn’t made his wishes public, it has been reported widely that he wants out if the Milwaukee Bucks are not competitive.
In Friday’s episode of the “The Kevin O’Connor Show,” the analyst touched on the topic:
“If Giannis wants to maximize the next contract, it has to get resolved now or he’s going to have to sign it w/ Milwaukee this summer. So I think for financial reasons he wants to get this resolved sooner than later. He just doesn’t want to be the one to break up.”
Giannis Antetokounmpo is in the first season of a three-year, $175,369,698 contract with a player option in the final year. He is eligible to sign an extension in the upcoming offseason, and if the two parties do not reach an agreement by the summer, things could get more chaotic.
Antetokounmpo has made it clear throughout his career that he wants to stay competitive, and it’s something the Bucks haven’t been this season. Midway through the season, they are two games removed from the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference with a 17-24 record.
Even if Giannis Antetokounmpo is able to lead the team into the playoffs just by his individual greatness, the Bucks simply don’t have enough firepower to compete for a title.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Reacted to Being Booed at Home
It’s nothing new to be booed by opposing fans, but when it’s your home fans calling you out, it can be assumed that things are very wrong. On Tuesday, the Bucks were at the receiving end of a 139-106 blowout against an Anthony Edwards-less Minnesota Timberwolves. The fans didn’t take too lightly to it and booed the team.
After the game, Giannis Antetokounmpo said it was a new experience for him, but it wasn’t something that was going to deter him from giving his best. He said, via Yahoo:
“Never. I’ve never been a part (of it). Kinda new for me,” Antetokounmpo said of being booed at home. “It doesn’t change. It’s the same thing. It doesn’t matter. I thrive through adversity. I thrive when people don’t believe in me.
“Doesn’t matter if I’m on the road, if I’m at home, if I’m at my family dinner, if I’m at the practice facility with my teammates. It doesn’t really matter. So, yeah, I’ve never been a part of something like that before, so it was something new for me. I like it though. I love it”
It will be interesting to see which direction things go from here on, as it is pretty evident that both fans and Antetokounmpo aren’t happy with things in Milwaukee.
