After the Golden State Warriors were eliminated from the play-in tournament, speculation about Steve Kerr’s future started spreading quickly. One of the more talked-about ideas was that he might step away from the NBA and possibly take a college coaching job at his alma mater, the University of Arizona. Now, new reports suggest a very different path could be on the table.
According to Ryan Glasspiegel, if Kerr decides to move on from coaching, he could become one of the most sought-after names in sports media. Major networks are expected to compete heavily to bring him on board, potentially setting off a major “bidding war.”
“ESPN, NBC, and Amazon are all expected to engage in a massive “bidding war” for Steve Kerr if he walks away from coaching,” Glasspiegel reported. “Kerr’s contract with the Warriors is expiring, and networks are reportedly lining up to make him their top TV target.”
A move into the broadcasting world would not be new territory for Kerr. In the early 2000s, he worked as an analyst for TNT before stepping away in 2007. He later returned to TV, covering the NBA during the 2010-2011 season and also contributing to NCAA Tournament broadcasts with Turner Sports and CBS in 2011.
Steve Kerr embraces Steph Curry and Draymond Green after potential last game as GSW coach
During the final minutes of the Golden State Warriors’ play-in game against the Phoenix Suns, the result was virtually decided. But what stood out more was the emotional scene unfolding on the sidelines.
Cameras captured Steve Kerr, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green embracing a group hug.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen next, but I love you guys to death. Thank you,” Kerr was heard saying.
Not long after, speculation began to grow that this season might have been Kerr’s last as head coach. Draymond Green also spoke about the viral interaction, stating that the moment indicated to him that Kerr’s time with the GSW is over.
“I’ve never been so uncertain since early in my career on what happens next,” Green said on his podcast. “But I am truly at a loss now because you just don’t know what direction will be what. Steph, myself, Steve shared a moment in what could be our last time playing with Steve as our coach. I’m happy we got to share that moment, and he didn’t miss the moment. It was a big deal.
“I hope he’s our coach next year. Do you want my opinion? I think not. Just because it just feels like that. It felt like that was it… Man, if it was, what a run it’s been. So lucky to have had for 12 years Steve as my coach.”
During his 12-year stint with Golden State, Kerr led the franchise to four championships and earned an NBA Coach of the Year award.
