NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s announcement of a new format for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game in mid-November earned mixed reactions. Many thought the fans would still not be interested as long as the players don’t give more effort in the league’s annual showcase event. Some thought the change would be a game-changer that would re-ignite fan interest.
The new “USA vs. World” format seemed to have delivered what Silver and the league hoped for, prompting fans to respond. One fan said:
“Adam Silver just saved his legacy with this new All-Star Game format.”
Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban chimed in:
“Adam Silver has to be happy. Fun. Competitive. Great energy.”
NFL legend Shannon Sharpe tossed in his thoughts:
“Adam Silver might have figured out something. This is the most competitive All Star gm we’ve seen in a long time. BOFF* gm were super competitive.”
One fan added:
“This is all fans wanted. We’re not asking NBA playoff defense just care. This has been a fun All Star game to watch.”
Another fan tweeted:
“This is the greatest NBA All Star Game of all time. No question.”
For years, the NBA has been looking to bring back fans to watch the All-Star Game. Last year, three teams and the winner of the Rising Stars Challenge were involved in the mini-tournament. It was received with so much backlash after players seemingly went through the motions.
This year, the mini-tournament format was retained, but the selection was altered. Two teams of American players, separated into “Stars” and “Stripes,” and the “World” team battled. Even without Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf) and Steph Curry (knee), the 2026 edition earned praise from fans.
Adam Silver Could Thank Victor Wembanyama for Setting 2026 NBA All-Star Game Tone
Last year, Victor Wembanyama was arguably the only All-Star who showed he cared. He played defense and contributed in every way possible every time he was on the floor. This year, named a starter for the first time, Wemby vowed to do the same.
The San Antonio Spurs center set the tone again, something Adam Silver should be thankful for. Against Team Starts in the first game of the mini-tournament, the Frenchman had 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks in nine minutes.
In Victor Wembanyama’s second game, he had 19 points and two rebounds in 10 minutes. Team Stripes’ Kawhi Leonard, of the host team LA Clippers, matched him with 35 points, three rebounds and two steals in 12 minutes.
After the game, Anthony Edwards and Jalen Brunson gave Wemby his props for the intensity of the All-Star tournament.
Silver could not have asked for a better and more impactful tone-setter than the 7-foot-5 Frenchman.
