Watch: Richard Childress Fights Back Tears While Remembering Kyle Busch After Austin Hill’s San Diego Win

Richard Childress paid a heartfelt tribute to Kyle Busch after Austin Hill’s O’Reilly Series win at San Diego. The team owner was visibly emotional and got choked up while addressing the late driver.

Hill’s win at Naval Base Coronado marked RCR’s maiden triumph after Busch’s passing. The No.21 driver took over Busch’s Cup seat and has largely finished outside the top-20.

San Diego, however, marks his second O’Reilly win of the season. During a victory lane interview with CW Sports, Childress made sure to mention Kyle Busch.

“It great to win here and you know, have we all got Kyle on our hearts? You know, you may not show it on outside, but you do here,” he said.

Kyle Busch joined RCR in 2023 and grabbed three wins that year. To honour his storied legacy, RCR decided to retire the No.8 entry in favour of Busch’s 11-year-old son, Brexton. The signage is up for his taking whenever he enters the sport.

Brexton went on to compete in the Charlotte Summer Shootout just few weeks after his father’s passing. He missed out on a win after a final-lap pass by Landon Thrasher.

The U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan resolution in honour of Kyle Busch. Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt were the last drivers to receive such recognition.

Two republican and two democrat senators joined hands to secure passage of the resolution. Here’s an excerpt of the resolution from Senator Ted Budd’s website:

“Busch had 19 consecutive seasons with a NASCAR Cup Series win (2005 through 2023), the longest of any driver. … [He] rounded out his career as the winningest driver across NASCAR’s 3 national series, with a record of 234 victories, including 63 Cup Series wins, 102 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series wins, and 69 CRAFTSMAN Truck Series wins. …

“Busch earned the respect of both opposing drivers and fans through his commitment to providing thrilling entertainment to NASCAR crowds with his performative driving style. … He embraced his role as a champion driver and devoted father, proudly mentored and coached his son, Brexton, who began his own journey in motorsports, and helped to foster the passion for racing in the next generation.”

Kyle Busch passed away from severe pneumonia that progressed to sepsis. He collapsed on the simulator and was gasping for air when the ambulance arrived. The two-time Cup champion was dealing with the illness for several weeks.

Despite the ordeal, Busch managed to win a Truck race a week before his passing. It was his second Truck win of the season, driving the No.7 Spire Motorsports Chevy. The weekend of his tragic loss, Daniel Suarez claimed victory in the same No.7 entry at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
