Will Wade Jokes About Reported $300,000 Bribery Controversy on His Return to LSU

Will Wade agreed to come back to LSU as their head coach earlier today. This sentence wouldn’t have been believable only a few years ago, but today, it’s a reality. His return has sparked discussions as fans are questioning the program’s decision.

Wade, on the other hand, is in good spirits. After being fired by the LSU Tigers in 2022, he joined the McNeese Cowboys as head coach. In 2025, he moved to NC State Wolfpack, and after a short stint, he’s back at LSU.

He was recently spotted by WBRZ News in his car and was asked a few questions. When asked about his return, Wade joked about ‘following more rules’, seemingly poking fun at the $300k bribery controversy.

“I’m trying to follow more rules this time,” he said.

He was also asked to send a message to the LSU fans, and Wade said that he was excited to be back.

The story of Will Wade is one of the most polarizing chapters in modern college basketball. The controversy began in March 2019, when reports surfaced of an FBI wiretap. In the recording, Wade was heard discussing a recruitment deal with a middleman.

Wade sounded frustrated on the recording as he detailed making a “strong-a*s offer” to a recruit. His conduct was in violation of NCAA rules. At the time, making payments to players wasn’t permitted in college basketball.

The NCAA accused Wade of 11 violations, stating that he or his staff arranged cash payments for at least 11 different players or their families. One of those offers was reportedly worth $300k. All of it seems to be a thing from the past for Wade, which he has moved on from.

Will Wade’s Message for NC State

NC State had hired Will Wade with high expectations. He showed great potential in his first season with the program, reaffirming their belief in him. Wade took the team to the NCAA Division I First Four in his first and only season.

If he stayed there, NC State might’ve improved over time, but now they’re left with the task of finding his replacement. Wade released a statement, thanking NC State for trusting him.

“I want to take a moment to sincerely thank North Carolina State University, Athletic Director Boo Corrigan, and the entire administration for the opportunity to be part of something special. From day one, everything that was promised to me and my staff was delivered-and then some,” he wrote.

Wade said that he will always cherish the time he spent at NC State and will continue to root for the program.
