Mark Pope is already under heavy fire, with criticism directed at him from all angles following Kentucky’s average showing to end the previous season, and with the stakes now higher than ever, the clock might be ticking.
It’s no secret that if the results don’t start coming this campaign, Pope could end up fearing for his job, and so it makes sense that the Wildcats have been trying to get the best out of the transfer portal, all while Pope uses his charm to lure kids out of high school to join his team.
One such player has been Tyran Stokes. The No. 1 recruit out of the 2026 class has been relentlessly pursued by Mark Pope, but he almost seems to be enjoying the chase a bit too much, knowing he holds all the cards and keeping the world waiting.
Monday has been touted as decision day for him, but with no clarity in mind, it appears Pope has gone chasing Ryan Hampton to fix his long-term problems.
Mark Pope Makes a Visit to 2027 Recruit Ryan Hampton a Priority
It seems fitting that Kentucky’s charismatic head coach is making a visit to 2027 top-10 recruit Ryan Hampton on the same day that Tyran Stokes is expected to announce his college decision.
Pope needs a win, and this might end up being one, even if it doesn’t pay off immediately. If Hampton agrees to join the Wildcats, they’ll be getting a player who is a potential reclass candidate, likely making him eligible for the 2026-27 season.
Moreover, Ryan’s elder brother, RJ Hampton, is a former first-round NBA Draft pick, and at 6-foot-6, he is an imposing figure among a host of shooting guards.
His visits to the likes of SMU, Nebraska, NC State, and LSU could play a role in where he goes, making it a bigger win for Pope if he can convince him to come play for Kentucky.
