Tommy Lloyd’s son, Liam, may have inadvertently hinted at his dad parting ways with the Arizona Wildcats.
On Monday, 247 Sports‘ Grant Hughes shared a tweet on X. It was a post talking about how Lloyd might join the North Carolina Tar Heels as their new head coach.
What gave it away was Liam Lloyd liking the post about his dad’s departure from Arizona to Chapel Hill.
“Tommy Lloyd’s son, Liam Lloyd, liked an Instagram post rumoring his father to #UNC. Liam Lloyd played for the Wildcats last season. It’s day 6 of UNC’s coaching search, everything is under the microscope,” Hughes wrote.
Back in 2021, the Tar Heels promoted Hubert Davis as their new head coach. However, despite making three straight March Madness runs, the team has been struggling to find postseason success.
This season, Davis once again made the NCAA Tournament. However, they were eliminated by the VCU Rams in the first round. The team then decided to fire him while starting a search for a suitable replacement.
On the other hand, Tommy Lloyd is in the middle of his fifth season with the Arizona Wildcats. This year, he’s helped the program enter March Madness as the Big 12 regular-season and tournament champions.
On Saturday, Lloyd and his team defeated the Purdue Boilermakers 79-64 in the Elite Eight. This victory helped them book their spot in the Final Four for the first time since 2001.
Former UNC Player Claims That Tommy Lloyd Wanted UNC Job Before Hubert Davis’s Promotion
Hubert Davis started his stint with UNC as an assistant to Roy Williams. Davis was named as his successor after his retirement in 2021.
However, on the “TarHeel247” podcast, former UNC player Justin Watts revealed how Tommy Lloyd was eyeing this position before taking up the Arizona Wildcats job.
“Tommy Lloyd wanted the job before he went to Arizona,” Watts said, as per the Tar Heels Wire. “If Arizona wins, I think it’s out of the question. If they lose, it’s kind of like how we got Roy. Kansas was in the Final Four, they were interviewing him about it, and it was lingering over his head. Then they lost, he ended up coming to Carolina.”
“Roy had a lot more ties than Tommy Lloyd, other than Lloyd wanting the job before he went to Arizona. I would like to have Tommy Lloyd out of all the options we know about,” he added.
Lloyd and the Wildcats face Michigan in the Final Four on Saturday at 8:49 p.m. ET.
