Darryn Peterson is one of the most talented players in this season’s freshman class. Along with AJ Dybantsa and Cameron Boozer, Peterson is one of the candidates to become the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The Kansas Jayhawks star was one of the most talked-about players in high school. After his infamous battle with Dybantsa, fans were waiting to see the future of basketball play at the bigger stage.
While both Dybantsa and Boozer have played all their games, Peterson has struggled to find his 100% fitness. He has struggled with a hamstring injury all season and has only featured in 12 games so far. Even in those appearances, he hardly played more than 30 minutes. In his recovery as well, things have not been easy. During games and practice sessions, he has suffered from cramps.
However, his struggles have not stopped him from performing at the highest level. In 12 games, he has averaged 21.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. Peterson returned to court after 10 games to face AJ Dybantsa and BYU, played 20 minutes, and helped Kansas win a crucial battle. But it was Texas Tech when he finally showed why he is so highly rated. He scored 19 points and had two clutch threes at the end of the game. However, Texas Tech’s crowd trash-talked Peterson with a profanity-filled chant.
The Texas Tech crowd chanted “he’s a p***y” at Darryn Peterson. He made them eat those words when he hit back-to-back clutch threes in the final minutes of the game for a 64-61 win.

Fans online slammed Texas Tech’s crowd for trash-talking Darryn Peterson and triggering a huge comeback.
“Trash fan base ! Embarrassing for an otherwise classy big 12,” one fan said.

“If that’s the shot fired to keep him playing in the second half, I welcome it,” one fan commented.
